Efficient management and use of limited resources have always been key societal goals. Achieving these goals requires supplying resources in a safe, reliable, economical, and environmentally friendly manner, which drives industrial efficiency and enhances sectorial competitiveness.

Today’s energy and environmental policies focus on three main objectives:

  1. Ensuring security of supply through energy savings and diversification of sources.
  2. Increasing economic competitiveness.
  3. Promoting sustainability and combating climate change

The CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA), initiated in May 2024, intends to contribute to these objectives. It builds on the work done in the ECOFACT Project, which aims to help manufacturing industries optimize their energy performance while considering production constraints. Additionally, the project introduces a green marketing approach through the concept of energy and environmental signatures of products from a life-cycle perspective.

Within the ECOFACT Project, a range of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) have been identified as essential tools for measuring and monitoring sustainable performance in manufacturing. These indicators help improve Europe’s competitiveness by making better use of raw materials, natural resources, and renewable energies. The selected KPIs are derived from various sources, including academic and industry reports, sectoral analyses, and standards related to energy, environmental, and resource management.

The chosen KPIs adhere to the SMARTER principle, meaning they are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. This selection lays the foundation for evaluating the fulfillment of the CWA’s objectives.

By implementing these standardized KPIs, the CEN Workshop Agreement supports the efficient use of resources, driving sustainability and competitiveness in the manufacturing sector.
