ECOENERGY Cluster Releases Policy Briefing to Drive Sustainable Manufacturing

The ECOENERGY Cluster, including ECOFACT and sister-projects E2COMATION, GREEN.DAT.AI, iBECOME, DENiM, and EnerMan has launched a Policy Briefing to guide the manufacturing sector toward more energy-efficient and sustainable practices. Supported by the Horizon Results Booster (HRB) and the Horizon 2020 program, this document highlights transformative strategies to optimize energy usage, reduce CO2 emissions, and leverage cutting-edge technologies.

The Policy Briefing demonstrates how initiatives like ECOFACT, E2COMATION, and DENiM are achieving energy savings of 10%-40% across pilot cases by addressing manufacturing processes at every hierarchical level. These efforts not only reduce costs and carbon footprints but also enhance regulatory compliance and operational decision-making.

Strategic Recommendations

The Policy Briefing outlines actionable steps to enhance energy efficiency in manufacturing. One key recommendation is the implementation of integrated energy measurement systems to enable reliable energy management. By using advanced sensors and layered architectures, manufacturers can gain an understanding of energy flows across their value chains, ensuring real-time data collection and monitoring.

Another critical step is the development of data-driven workflows to facilitate energy-efficient decision-making. Shared data, enhanced interoperability, and collaboration across the value chain empower stakeholders to make informed decisions that improve resource efficiency.

The briefing also emphasizes the importance of adopting sustainable transport practices and utilizing lifecycle assessments. Strategies such as route optimization, the use of low-emission vehicles, and evaluating the environmental impact of transportation contribute to a more sustainable supply chain.

Finally, the integration of sustainable production practices is highlighted as a priority. Automated decision-support tools and efficient production scheduling are essential for optimizing energy use throughout manufacturing processes. These measures not only improve sustainability but also enhance overall operational performance.
