ECOFACT Showcases Industrial Disaggregation Algorithm at SEB-24 Conference

In September, ECOFACT partners took the stage at the KES International event, Sustainability in Energy and Buildings 2024 (SEB-24), to present cutting-edge developments in energy management for industry. The conference, held from September 18-20 in Santa Cruz, Portugal, provided a platform for researchers and industry experts to discuss innovative approaches to sustainable energy use in buildings and industrial settings. Representing ECOFACT was José L. Hernández from CARTIF, who shared insights on a groundbreaking energy disaggregation algorithm tested and implemented as part of the ECOFACT project (paper co-authored with Francisco Morentin).

During the presentation, Hernández introduced the industrial disaggregation algorithm, a core component of ECOFACT’s digital twin solution, designed to advance predictive maintenance and optimise energy efficiency in manufacturing. The algorithm represents a leap forward in Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM), enabling detailed monitoring and identification of energy inefficiencies within complex industrial systems. By leveraging advanced data analytics and real-time insights, this solution empowers industries to identify and address energy inefficiencies and waste, thereby supporting better-informed decisions for sustainable practices and cost reductions.

Why This Matters for ECOFACT and Industry 4.0?

This algorithm is one of ECOFACT’s key innovations, contributing to Task 3.4 of the project by integrating advanced analytics into digital twin applications. This integration supports smarter energy management in line with the broader goals of ECOFACT, which aims to facilitate a shift towards greener and more energy-efficient industrial processes. Through this presentation, the ECOFACT team demonstrated how cutting-edge algorithms can be applied practically within manufacturing, moving beyond theoretical models to showcase tangible results and benefits for energy management.

SEB-24: A Nexus for Innovation in Sustainability and Energy

SEB-24, organized by KES International, annually attracts experts in sustainable energy, smart building solutions, and green information technologies. This year’s conference featured a wide array of topics, including renewable energy systems, smart cities, and the latest trends in sustainable design. Conference proceedings will be published by Springer on February 2025 as part of the KES Smart Innovation Systems and Technologies series, offering contributors, like ECOFACT, recognition for their work on influential platforms like Scopus and Web of Science. Be sure to check our “Resources” page for updates once the publication is available!

For ECOFACT, participation in SEB-24 reinforces its commitment to advancing Industry 4.0 principles, showcasing how technology can drive sustainable energy practices in even the most energy-intensive sectors.
