On September 10th, 2024, ECOFACT hosted an informative webinar titled “Enhancing Must-Cooling with DTP Tools and AHP Analysis.” This event brought together experts and participants to explore how digital twin technology and analytic methods can significantly optimise the must-cooling process. For those who missed the live session or want to revisit the discussion, here is an overview of the key points shared and insights gained.
RINA kicked off the session with a thorough introduction, setting the context for the detailed exploration of must-cooling optimisation. The presentation included our recently launched promotional video, which offered viewers an overview of ECOFACT’s project and platform goals. This foundation was crucial for understanding the relevance and significance of the topic at hand.
The webinar’s focus was on the innovative use of Digital Twin Platform (DTP) tools and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) analysis to refine the must-cooling process within the brewing industry. By showcasing advanced analytical techniques and their real-world applications, the session highlighted how these tools can improve operational efficiency and decision-making.
CIRCE provided an in-depth look at the must-cooling process at Athenian Brewery, detailing its critical role within the brewery. This segment illuminated the process’s importance and set the stage for deeper technical discussions. It underscored how essential the must-cooling stage is for ensuring both the quality of the product and the efficiency of brewery operations.
Following this overview, CARTIF took centre stage to delve into the physical aspects and challenges of the must-cooling process. They elaborated on the mechanisms involved, such as cooling jackets and heat exchangers, and discussed the complexities related to temperature control and heat transfer. This detailed description offered attendees a clearer understanding of the process and the difficulties in maintaining consistency throughout the cooling phase.
ONE TEAM demonstrated the capabilities of the Digital Twin Platform (DTP) tools, including the simulator and optimiser, showcasing how these tools provide detailed time-evolution data based on inputs uploaded by industrial operators. The simulator tracks changes in system parameters such as temperature and flow, offering insights across various components, including the hot water tank, heat exchangers, the heated water tank, the ethanol buffer tank, and the chilled water tank. This simulation is carried out over a two-hour time horizon.
Additionally, the optimiser performs multiple simulations as requested by operators, summarising key factors like energy and water usage. The raw output from the optimiser is sent by the DTP to the AHP algorithms, which analyse the data and present suggested improvements. These suggestions are shown on the DTP and help identify the best-simulated scenarios for optimising the must-cooling process. This demonstration effectively highlighted the practical applications of the DTP tools in identifying inefficiencies and recommending strategies to enhance overall system performance.
CIRCE introduced the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), explaining its significance and how it integrates with DTP tools. This introduction laid the groundwork for understanding how AHP complements digital twin technology by providing a structured approach to decision-making.
In a subsequent segment, CIRCE delved into the AHP methodology. They outlined how AHP decomposes complex problems into smaller, manageable parts and how it applies to evaluating and selecting optimal cooling strategies. By assessing various criteria such as energy efficiency, cost, and system performance, AHP helps in making informed, data-driven decisions.
Building on this, CIRCE presented the results of AHP analysis, leveraging data from the optimiser. They highlighted actionable insights into how AHP can improve decision-making and enhance system performance. This segment demonstrated the practical benefits of applying AHP to real-world scenarios, showing how it can guide the selection of the most efficient cooling strategies and optimise resource allocation.
The webinar concluded with a Q&A session, where attendees had the opportunity to engage with the speakers and clarify any doubts. Discussions during this session covered topics such as the availability of simulation data and the practical applications of DTP tools and AHP in various industry contexts.
In closing, the event reflected on the key takeaways and next steps for attendees. The ECOFACT webinar on must-cooling optimisation provided valuable insights into cutting-edge technologies and methodologies. By integrating digital twin technology with analytic hierarchy methods, participants gained a comprehensive understanding of how to enhance system performance and manage resources effectively.
